The Olympic Torch is coming to Oxford on Monday 9 July 2012 as part of its tour of the UK and we need your help.
The Torch will be carried through the city by local torch-bearers and will travel down 5.7 miles of Oxford’s roads and streets; giving our community the opportunity to be part of the London 2012 celebration.
The Torch will continue its journey to South Park where an evening celebration event will take place.
On the morning of Tuesday 10 July, the torch will leave the Iffley Road running track to continue its journey through Oxfordshire and into Berkshire.
We are offering you a unique opportunity to be involved and become a part of history by volunteering to help with the event.
Places are going quickly and we have nearly reached the number of volunteers required to help steward the Torch Relay route through Oxford and to help with the evening celebration event in South Park.
Volunteering will consist of a minimum of four hours and a full briefing will take place for all volunteers who wish to take part. Further training for some roles will also take place.
Please read the Frequently Asked Questions sheet and then fill out our online form with your information to register your interest.
If you have any questions that aren’t covered in the FAQs, please email volunteering@oxford.gov.uk
Please note, the closing date to register your interest is Thursday 31st May 2012.
Oxford City Council recently held a Volunteering Fair as part of our continuing commitment to building stronger communities across Oxford.
Almost 100 potential volunteers attended the event to find out more about opportunities available with 37 community and voluntary organisations, offering a chance to utilise and develop skills to make a real difference.
From this event, we have produced a booklet to summarise the opportunities available:

If you are interested in any of the volunteering opportunities outlined within this document, please contact the organisations directly using the details provided.
5% of Oxford's population volunteer at least 1 hour per week, which is higher than the national average of 4.7%. Given the current population of Oxford, which is approximately 150,000 people, 5% equates to around 7500 people.
At minimum wage for 1 hour a week, the current level of volunteering in Oxford is worth approximately £2.3 million. Increasing volunteering by 1% (i.e. from 5% to 6%) would be worth almost half a million pounds.
You can find out about volunteering opportunities in Oxford from the Oxfordshire Community and Voluntary Action website.
