Archaeologists

Oxford City Council's Archaeologist provides development control advice to the Planning Authority on below-ground historic environment issues.

In support of this, the authoritative record for the historic core of Oxford is an Urban Archaeological Database (UAD) covering 7.5 square kilometres; for the remainder of Oxford further information can be obtained from Oxfordshire County Council's Historic Environment Record (HER).

For a map of the area covered by the Urban Archaeological Database and contact details for the UAD and HER visit our Urban Archaeological Database page.

For archaeological advice on development proposals contact the conservation team's archaeologist.

Certain strategic historic environment issues affecting the city as part of Oxfordshire are addressed by the County Archaeological Service, which is also responsible for maintaining the SMR for areas not covered by the City UAD.

Archaeology and Planning

Reminders of this heritage are nevertheless a finite resource, and once disturbed are irreplaceable.  The Local Plan Proposals Map identifies the City centre archaeological area, in addition to which there are known concentrations of past human activity elsewhere in Oxford, including the historic village centres.
