All trees within the UK are protected under the Forestry Acts. In general, anyone felling more than 5 cubic metres of timber in any calendar quarter requires a Felling Licence from the Forestry Commission. There are exemptions however, which includes the felling of trees that are located in domestic gardens.
For advice contact the Forestry Commission, using the details on the Forestry Commission website.
