Hats and shoes through Oxfordshire's history are the theme of a unique new exhibition - the first joint venture by city, county, university and independent museums and collections.
Discover the magic of garments, 'supernatural' shoes and captivating stories from Oxfordshire's past. Explore work, shopping, performance, magic and childhood through hats and shoes.
The exhibition explores how fashions transform and transfix us and why we desire that ‘must have’ fashion accessory. There are also archaeological fragments, animation, designs by community groups, carers and children.
The exhibition includes project such as:
Shoe Gazing Animation - Community Exhibition at The Museum of Oxford
The Museum of Oxford Community Art Group recently worked with Oxford-based StopMoGo to create a short animation based on a fictional Oxford Shoe Company. The catwalk backgrounds show Oxford High Street through the ages. The community art group consists of mainly retired people, looking to explore new things, develop skills and meet new friends. A member of the group said: "Knowing that we were part of the workshop that helped create this animation is a fantastic feeling of achievement. It was lots of fun and at the same time I learnt how animation comes together. Fascinating seeing our work onscreen and many thanks for producing such a fun shoe animation."
Archaeology
Members of the archaeology community group from the Museum of Oxford selected medieval fragments of shoe from the Oxford Castle to form part of the exhibitions. They have visited the Museums Resource Centre in Standlake to find out about their history, the conservation that will take place and to draw the items they are interested in. There are photographs of the group selecting objects.
Young Carers
The Young Carers Early Intervention Service artist Emma Titcombe worked with young carers aged 9 - 12 to design shoes that have magic properties. This idea comes from the old tradition of hiding shoes in buildings to ward off evil.

Oxfordshire Museums Heritage Partnership - Accessories Project
This project was set up to encourage knowledge sharing and collaboration between museums across Oxfordshire. There are several strands to the project, including a survey of the collections, training for museum staff, an object-based exhibition and a community exhibition.

Oxford's Sporting Heritage

A summer celebration of art work inspired by Oxford’s sporting heritage, researched, interpreted and created by local community groups. From the history of Oxford United Football Club to Roger Bannister’s world famous first sub-4 minute mile, Oxford Olympians to local sporting heroes this exhibition is one not to be missed…..! Featuring an historical timeline, sculpture, objects, film, books, dressing up and a family craft area. Look our for our summer programme of sports-themed walks with Mark Davies and family drop-in arts and crafts, supported by ECCO Oxford.
A monthly Art and Craft Fair will be held at Oxford Town Hall on the following dates to help showcase the work of local craft workers and artisits:
Craft workers and artists signed up to the Fair include Garry Curran with his wire bicycle sculptures, Shalotte's copper wirework jewellery, knitwear, artwear, accessories, hats, aprons, gifts and work by local artist Ali Clements.
The event takes place from 11am until 3.30pm in the Long Room at the Town Hall. Entry is free.

Galway Boy Mike Denver (Plus special guest Blake and Brazil)
Mike Denver's first professional gig was in The Park House Hotel, Edgeworthstown on Saturday the 11th January 2003 with his full band. not a full house, but boy has he moved forward since then. His first album was recorded in early 2003, 'Wings to Fly' which included tracks, 'You're my Best Friend', Johnny Cash's, 'Cry Cry Cry' and, 'It's a Dream Come Through'. This album was recorded in Tony Maher's studio in Headford and also featured ace guitarist Frankie Colohan. To date Mike has recorded eight albums namely: 'Wings to Fly', 'Love to Live', 'Messenger Boy', 'Christmas Country', 'Galway Boy', 'Seasons in the Sun', 'Got a Funny Feeling' and 'Thank God for the Radio'.

London Welsh Male Voice Choir

The Choir was formed in 1902 and quickly gained a reputation for excellence in performance. Disrupted by the two World Wars, the Choir was re-established in 1961 and now has over one hundred members.
Whilst maintaining the best of Welsh male choral tradition, the Choir has also sought to be innovative. In 1969 it introduced the first of the now famous London Welsh Festivals of Male Choirs at the renowned Royal Albert Hall. Since then, this biennial Festival has flourished and has been widely copied.
The Choir has sung at many of Britain's most prestigious concert halls, cathedrals and sporting venues. They were also the backing group to the pop band Take That and have recorded with Charlotte Church, Aled Jones and Bryn Terfel.

Soul in the City
A unique music event, not to be missed is being brought to the heart of the City, by the Oxford Gospel Choir.
On the 13th and 14th of July a special one off concert is being held at Oxford Town Hall. Oxford Gospel Choir and ACM Gospel Choir ('Last Choir Standing' and Led by Mark De Lisser from 'The Voice') are coming together to bring the sounds of Gospel with a twist of Soul, Funk and Pop to the City.

Strictly Oxford
The inaugural Strictly Oxford event promises to be a fabulous and entertaining evening when local celebrities will be donning their dancing shoes in aid of Vale House. Each Celebrity will have six weeks tuition leading up to the show and they will all be partnered by a talented dancer from the Step by Step Dance School.
On the night, they will each perform a Latin and a Ballroom dance followed by a unique and exciting show dance! Join us on the night, support the dancers, vote for your favourite dancers, support a great cause and have a thoroughly entertaining evening.

Oxford Proms Orchestra, conducted by John Traill, is joined by international award winning pianist Mami Shikimori for a performance of one of Mozart's best loved masterworks, his Piano Concerto No 21 in C K467
Mami received an ovation for a stunning performance of Beethoven's "Emperor" concerto in last year's proms and we are delighted to welcome her again. Other works in the Programme are Symphony No 5 in B flat by Schubert and a rarely heard masterpiece by Sibelius, Rakastava (The Lover) Op 14.

Star violinist Masayuki Kino, soloist/concertmaster of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, has recently had his recording of the Beethoven Violin Concerto/Romances released by Octavia records in Japan to great critical acclaim, and we are delighted to welcome him to Oxford.
The inspired melodic writing of this concerto finds a perfect foil with the energy and driving rhythms in Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony, and the concert opens with Henry Purcell's noble and moving Chacony in G minor for Strings. Oxford Proms Orchestra is conducted by John Traill

Acker's Back in Town - An Evening with Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band
Acker Bilk, British clarinetist and Jazz band leader, has been actively playing and contributing to British Jazz since the 1950s. In March 2001, Acker was honoured with an MBE for his services to the music industry. In 2005, Acker was also awarded the BBC Jazz Award for his unique contribution to Jazz in the UK.

50th Anniversary Concert of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem
The final words of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem are of peace and hope, but on-going conflicts around the world suggest that although almost 50 years have passed since the work was first performed, to celebrate the rebuilding and re-construction in May 1962 of the bomb-blasted Coventry Cathedral, the sentiments of Wilfred Owen, voiced in the epigraph, have lost none of their relevance: "My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity. All a poet can do today is warn"
Time does not lessen their importance or impact. The Newman Singers and Ensemble with the Oxford Sinfonia present the 50th Anniversary performance with outstanding soloists: Charlotte Newstead, Peter Willis and Quentin Hayes on behalf of Kianda Foundation, Kenya.

Meditation Class - Diamond Way Buddhism UK
Every Wednesday, 8pm, Judge's Room. Oxford Buddhist Group meets once a week for a guided meditation on the 16th Karmapa. These meditation classes are suitable for all who wish to learn to meditate. For newcomers there is always a short introduction to Buddhism and brief explanations on how to meditate. They regularly hold courses on Buddhism and Buddhist meditation classes, guided by experienced practitioners and travelling teachers appointed by Lama Ole Nydahl.
