Low Carbon Oxford

Low Carbon Oxford is a pioneering city-wide programme of collaboration between private, public and non-profit organisations with the aim of ensuring Oxford's future as a sustainable and low carbon city.

The objectives of the Low Carbon Oxford programme are:

  • to reduce the overall carbon emissions of the city by 3% year on year - achieving an 80% reduction by 2050,
  • the creation of more 'green jobs' and a sustainable economy,
  • for Oxford to become an exemplar low carbon city for the UK.

We believe that these common goals can only be achieved by working together and drawing on the strengths of different sector organisations.

The story so far

Led by the Oxford Strategic Partnership, the Low Carbon Oxford programme was launched on 14 October 2010 when 15 Pathfinder organisations signed the Low Carbon Oxford Charter which can be downloaded below:

The charter states that we are committed to working together to create a low carbon, sustainable Oxford and that we will work to ensure that Oxford's leadership in reducing carbon emissions and tackling climate change is widely recognised.

The programme is rapidly gathering momentum; there are now 23 pathfinder organisations committed to the charter, the programme has attracted over £300,000 in funding and there are a number of exciting projects in place which will contribute to carbon reduction across the city.

The programme has 3 key strands:

Pathfinder Programme: A set of collaboration projects which Pathfinder organisations from the public sector, private sector and the community will work together to develop and which will lead to short-term impacts on carbon emissions.

Measuring, Monitoring and Mapping: Academics and experts in field of carbon footprinting collaborating to develop standard methodologies for measuring and monitoring of carbon footprint and emissions of organisations and individuals in Oxford and for mapping an overall carbon footprint for the city.

Oxford Futures: In order to tackle the problem of climate change and adapt for future conditions some large scale forward thinking is required.  Oxford Futures is the arm of the programme which is concerned with cutting edge technologies and large scale solutions for the sustainability of the whole city; working with our universities and researchers to reach 2050 targets as soon as possible.

Running in parallel these key areas will drive and develop projects for today and ensure that Oxford remains at the forefront of climate change innovation whilst developing mechanisms for monitoring and measuring progress across the city.
