Your responsibilities
- Resetting trip switches and, if necessary, turning off the mains supply.
- Replacing light bulbs, fluorescent tubes and starters.
- Testing and cleaning battery-operated smoke detectors regularly, and replacing the battery in battery-operated detectors if it gets low (starts beeping every 30 seconds). See About your smoke detector.
- Replacing plugs and fuses for your own appliances.
Advice
- Do not touch bare wires.
- Do not touch sockets or switches with wet hands.
- If water is leaking onto electrical fittings or a fitting is dangerous, do not use any switches connected to it and contact us immediately.
- Make sure that you know where the trip switches are located in your home and understand how to use them. See Resetting a trip switch.
- You can check if an appliance is faulty by trying a different appliance in the same socket.
We need to know
- If you have no lights or power, is there a power cut? Are other properties in the area affected? Which lights, sockets or appliances are affected: all or just some? Have you checked the fuses or trip switches? See Resetting a trip switch.
- If a fitting or appliance is not working, which room is it in? Have you checked the fuse or trip switch? See Resetting a trip switch.
- If a light is not working, have you tried a new bulb, fluorescent tube or starter? See Changing a fluorescent tube or starter.
- If a light is loose or broken, what type of lampholder does it have: pendant or batten?
- If a light switch is loose or broken, what type is it: single, double or a pullcord?
- If a socket is loose or broken, what type is it: single, double, or is it part of a cooker control unit?
- If a smoke detector is faulty or beeping, is it battery-operated or mains wired? If battery operated, have you tried a new battery? See About your smoke detector.
