- Check Advice below.
Your responsibilities
- Getting chimneys (for wood or coal fires) swept at least once a year.
- Maintaining and repairing appliances you have had installed.
- Replacing ashpans and fire baskets for solid fuel fires.
Advice
- If you suspect a gas leak, call the gas emergency supplier immediately on 0800 111 999 - use a phone outside your home. Then let us know too. Using a phone, even a mobile, inside could spark an explosion. Turn off the gas at the mains and open windows. Do not smoke or switch anything electrical on or off until the problem is fixed (not even doorbells, computers or door entry systems).
- If a room is cold, it may be that you have set the thermostatic valve on the radiator too low.
- If a radiator is loose or leaking as a result of your own redecoration work, we will charge you for repairing it.
We need to know
- If you smell gas, where is the smell coming from? Is it from a gas leak, or has the gas been left on unlit? See Advice above.
- If smoke or fumes are coming into a room, what type of fire do you have: gas or solid fuel? If you use a wood or coal fire, has the chimney been swept recently? See Health and safety.
- If central heating is not working, is it a communal heating system? Is the timer or programmer set correctly? See Adjusting central heating controls. What kind of heating is it: gas, electric or solid fuel (wood or coal)? What type of system is it: radiators, warm air or storage heaters? Are you getting any heat at all? Are you getting hot water?
- If a fire or heater is not working, what type of heater is it: gas convector heater or fire, electric convector heater, electric bar fire or fan heater?
- If a radiator is loose or leaking, how did this happen? Where is it leaking from: a joint valve or a hole?
- If a radiator is not getting warm, is the boiler working? Are any other radiators affected? Is the thermostatic valve set correctly? Is the room warm?
- If there is no hot water, is there any water flowing from your hot taps? What type of heater is it: central heating boiler, gas water heater or electric immersion heater?
