Your responsibilities
- Taking steps to prevent water in pipes and tanks from freezing. See Frozen or burst pipes.
- Turning off your water supply at the stoptap if a water pipe has burst.
Advice
- Make sure you know where your mains stoptap is and check that it turns easily.
- If water is leaking onto electrical fittings, turn off the electricity supply at the consumer unit. See Resetting a trip switch.
- If you think a pipe has burst, turn off the water at the stoptap, turn off the water heater and turn on all taps to drain the system. See Frozen or burst pipes.
- Your pipes may be noisy when heating comes on or goes off. This is due to normal expansion and contraction of the pipes.
We need to know
- What is the problem, eg: water leaking; overflow running; tap dripping, broken or loose; no water supply or low water pressure; noisy pipes when you turn on the cold taps; pipe frozen?
- If water is leaking, where is it coming from: a hole in the roof, the flat above, the hot water cylinder, the cold water storage tank, pipes or a radiator? Is it cold or hot water? Do you think a pipe has burst? Are electrical fittings getting wet? See Advice above.
- If an overflow is running, where is the flow coming from: toilet, water tank or boiler? How fast is it flowing: dripping, running or gushing?
- If a tap, where is it: bath, basin or sink? Is it a hot or cold tap? What type is it?
- If there is no water supply or the water pressure is low, are other properties in the area affected? If so, ring your water company (see Contacting us for the number).
- Is there water flowing from the hot taps? If not, turn off the water heater.
- Is the stoptap jammed? Are you getting cold water in the kitchen?
- If a pipe is frozen, is it inside or outside? Have pipes split or separated at a joint? If inside, have you tried to thaw the pipe yourself? See Frozen or burst pipes.
