Your responsibilities
- Replacing broken or cracked glass unless you can give us a police crime report number.
- Putting up curtain rails or roller blinds.
Advice
- If a problem has been caused by vandalism or a break-in, you should report it to the police and get a crime report number (not an incident number), otherwise we will charge you for the cost of the repair.
- You may be able to claim on your household insurance to cover the cost of replacing glass which is broken or cracked by accident.
We need to know
- What is the problem, eg: glass broken or cracked in a window or door; putty crumbling or beading loose, missing or broken around window or door glass; window sticking, jammed, rotten or damaged; cill or ledge broken or rotten; catch, stay or fastener broken or not working; draughty window?
- If glass is broken or cracked, how did this happen? See Advice above. Where is the window or door? What is the frame made of: wood, metal or plastic? What size of pane is it (approximately)? Is it double-glazed? What type of glass is it: clear, obscured, wired, laminated or toughened? See drawings in Doors and frames.
- If putty or beading is loose, missing or broken, which window or door is it? How much is affected? What is the frame made of: metal or wood? What type of beading is it: wooden, rubber or plastic?
- If a window, which window is it? What type of window is it, for example, hinged (casement), sliding, tilt-and-turn or pivot? What is the frame made of: wood, metal or plastic? Are the hinges broken? Do you know what is causing the problem?
- If an outside cill or ledge, which window is it? Which storey is it on? What type is it: wooden, concrete, tiled or plastic?
- If a window is draughty, which window is it? Where is the draught coming through: between the frame and the wall or between the window and the frame? What is the frame made of: wood, metal or plastic?
